Zanzibar!

Early in the school year we had a week off for EID and traveled to Zanzibar. We had been waiting for a while to get the official holiday off and when we did, we started planning! It was between going to Jordan or somewhere in Africa. My heart was set on Jordan, but we decided we would need more to time to truly experience all that Jordan has to offer……so Zanzibar it was!

This trip was very spur of the moment for us, but even more so for our friend Jayna who booked a flight with us the night before we left and our friend Catherine who booked when we were already there. She hopped on a plane after getting off a flight from Russia and it couldn’t have been better!

We flew in to the very small airport in Zanzibar where we were taken in a van through Stone Town to where we were staying; Ras Michamvi Beach Resort on the south eastern coast of Zanzibar. It was like walking into paradise. The resort was stunning and the views were even more magnificent than the pictures. We had great little villas to stay in and beautiful pools to swim in.

While in Zanzibar some of us were able to go diving, while some of us snorkeled in Paje. We enjoyed wonderful food at our resort (Chipatu, Sambusa, fresh Tuna, and Serengeti beer) and were able to experience a Masai tribal dance. We traveled to Stone Town and explored the old part of Zanzibar. We took a boat out to Changuu Island, also known as Prison Island. It got its name as a former prison for slaves and quarantine station for Zanzibar. It’s also home to giant land tortoises that were imported from  Seychelles in the late 19th century. There are more than 160 tortoises and one is 192 years old. We also were able to eat dinner at The Rock restaurant. It’s located on Michamwi Pingwe peninsula and is a restaurant on a rock in the Indian Ocean.

Even though this was an impromptu trip, it’s one for the books!
